HHLA TK Estonia Expands Its Green Energy Initiatives

HHLA TK Estonia, a subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), has successfully launched the largest solar park at Muuga Harbour, Estonia. The first phase is operational, and expansion plans are already under way. The project contributes to a more sustainable energy future.

Solar Energy at Muuga Harbour

The solar park is located on the roofs of two warehouses at Muuga Harbour. On sunny days it generates enough energy to cover the electricity needs of the warehouses' cooling and ventilation systems, as well as a nearby workshop and office space. Surplus energy is fed into the harbour's power grid, reducing energy costs and increasing the use of green energy.

A Sustainable Future with Green Energy

Riia Sillave, CEO of HHLA TK Estonia, describes the company's commitment to sustainability:
– With this solar installation, we aim to produce more than half of our total electricity needs sustainably. By combining the daytime operation of our dual-powered hydraulic cranes with solar energy, we are already carbon-neutral during peak loads.

Understanding the Solar Park's Capacity

The project is led by Arvi Lugenberg, who explains the solar park's capacity:
– The first two solar parks have a total capacity of around 240 kWp, giving an average output of 720 kWh per day. In May, the solar panels produced 46,000 kWh, covering 50% of the general cargo terminal's electricity needs. Expected annual output is 240,000 kWh, based on several years of solar data.

The Expansion Continues

In addition to the existing installation, HHLA TK Estonia has begun preparing two more solar parks, to be located on other warehouses. This expansion will increase green energy production at the terminal more than 2.5-fold. One planned solar park, with a capacity of 100 kWp, will supply electricity to the head office and the container maintenance workshop. Another, larger 400 kWp solar park will support the electrification of the container yard with green energy.

Towards a Climate-Neutral Future

This project supports HHLA TK Estonia's contribution to HHLA's
long-term goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2040, while underlining the importance of investing in renewable energy production in Estonia.

Muuga Solar Park's Role in Sustainability

With the successful operation and planned expansion of Muuga solar park, HHLA TK Estonia sets an example for the transition to green energy, helping to secure the sustainability of both the harbour's and the country's energy infrastructure.
